Pretty wild stuff with little to no safety equipment compared to today. Then again, I wonder how many of those bike racers and car racers had survived combat in WWII and figured that they were safer at 160 mph on the beach?!

Grew up in Orlando; Daytona was only 60 miles away. Rode
my lightweight Harley 125 over the first time in '49 when was 14.
Really crazy stuff; Fireball Roberts, Tim and Tonty Flock, Junior Johnson,
Marshal Teague, Crash Tid. They raced the Mods on Saturday and the Stocks
(a new idea then) on Sunday. This was all on the old 4 mile beach course,
2 miles asphalt and 2 miles beach. Classic Cracker racing!
Crackers, Red necks and Moonshiners. But, the absolute wildest ass
thing that I have ever seen, was the Bike Races. All the factory teams
from Europe, Triumph, Norton, Moto Gussi plus about 100 Harleys and
Indians. They were doing about 160 back then when they hit the south turn,
and there was always a big crash there on the first lap. Every year that
they had the bike race on the old course there was someone killed in the
race! Baad shit man!!! I watched a Brit loose it on the beach
main straight and go out into the ocean! He bounced three times like a
skipping rock and wound up on the 3rd sand bar. He somehow survived.
During Bike Week, those who stood to make some money stayed and everybody else
boarded up their businesses and homes with plywood used for Hurricanes and
left! You had to see it, 10,000 or more crazy bikers and all the infamous
bike gangs, drunk out of their minds, racing up and down Atlantic Ave. The
only reason my parents let us go, was that we stayed with relatives on the
mainland side. This really brought back the memories
guys.
Just for grins, Google Crash Tidd!

NASCAR - non athletic sport centered around rednecks.
Took mini me on a lap of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday,
the discussion with the docent at the museum was more about the Le Mans cars in
the collection and the W198R Mercedes than any of the cars that actually ran the
Indy 500...
NASCAR always touts it has the worlds best drivers in their

After yesterday’s race, I’ve seen kids in carts drive better!
