I bet you it was one of those “a ha” moments when it was discovered. Probably when someone was playing around with magnaflux liquid, much like in the same manner as you described it and then figured “...maybe if we combine this with hydraulic oil...”.

I was at a dealer meeting when the Magnetic shocks were being
introduced for the Corvette.  They passed around a pair of syringes
that had been joined nose-to-nose, so when you push one plunger, the
other would move.  In other words, you could push the liquid back and
forth between the two syringes.  The syringes were filled with the
shock fluid.

The fluid was quite thin and readily moved between them.  ----  Until
a button magnet was placed at the joint between the syringes.  The
fluid essentially solidified and would no longer flow.  Very
interesting demonstration of the technology behind the shock
absorbers.
