Hey Matt,
That was just a brief little list.
I have a more thorough spreadsheet
with over 150 lines of filter information.
That’s funny Matt! “Did UFI or Ferrari offer
to cover repairs...”
Ferrari blamed UFI and UFI doesn’t care.

Brian,
Thanks for the thorough list and especially for that bulletin. Did UFI or Ferrari ever offer to cover repairs for owners who had a failure due to the faulty (recalled) filters? Just curious.

I believe the 512TR series and onwards used bespoke filters made by Purflux.

Clyde,
Maybe you didn't get any of the batch of 308/328 UFI filters to use on your 512TR or 575? The batch came out well after you had sold your 308.
'85 euro 308 (not a 512TR or 575)....
I use UFI filters on the 512 TR and the 575

Rob,
Thanks for answering Anthony and digging up the old emails referencing the situation. I wanted to respond more fully but you've filled in the gaps. The only thing I have to add is that at the
time, I felt so personally involved in this. I wanted to do a "nice thing" and host an "oil change party." I felt like at the time a lot of Ferrari guys were too scared to do any work on their own cars, so I would help people through an oil change or just
do it for them as they observed and learned (later I hosted one where we did a valve adjustment on Jim Cunningham's 328). I even asked around to some of our listers who were affiliated with vendors and as I recall I got a batch of donated new UFI filters for
308/328 cars from both T. Rutlands and Symbolic (hi, Brian Keegan). I helped with maybe 5-6 oil changes that day (including my car).
On the way home from the event, Jeff Dorman called me to tell me his oil filter blew and there was oil all over his car's engine compartment and he had it flat-bedded to Ferrari of Washington.
Later that week as I drove to work, my oil filter blew and I did the equivalent of an oil change on the shoulder of the road (the oil was gone so I just filled it back up and put another filter on). A few weeks later I blew another filter. I panicked because
I knew at least one other guy I'd helped that day was still driving on these filters and I knew for a fact that I didn't mess up an oil change three times or more in a row. I called and left a phone message with the Ferrari-lister (it was either Giang Hoang
or his brother Vu, I can't remember now). They never got my phone message -- in fact they were on business travel, got home from the airport and wanted nothing more to do than get out in their Ferrari for a drive, and guess what happened on that drive?
UFI would never own up to it, saying that apparently I, all the dealers, and all the independent shops were not torquing the oil filters down properly.
'85 euro 308 with a Baldwin filter
All,
They are the only filter to use in a Ferrari, that you can get one that fits. Long time listers remember the UFI oil
rubber gasket blowout drama. I still have one of those 25 year old 150$ I pulled from my inventory when they
were blowing off and have it on display at my house! I also bought one of these Chinetti ones for $$$$$$
but just for a display! HA
Enzo and old man Baldwin made friends and Baldwin said as long as he owned the company they would
make the oil filters for the Ferrari. I would not use anything else and when I see another on a Ferrari I wince….
They are the best made, strongest, least drain back, plus longtime Ferrari history, Peter uses
their air filter, I did not know they made one. Pete what is the part number? I never drive my car
off road, in the rain, dust, wind etc. and I just had my airbox off and the K&N looks new. I have
seen some conflicting reports on their hp/effectiveness but still might swap one out for the $$$
ufi air filter I took out! HA I want to believe! HAA

Any thoughts on Baldwin oil filters? I still have a few from my 328 days I never used....

This is correct from research I did several years ago. I take a hard pass on K&N air filters. At the time I was digging, the AC Delco air filters seemed to perform best. Decent air flow
when new, good filtration and less of a drop in flow as they got dirty.
Oil filters are a different story and are constantly evolving. Mobil 1, Bosch Extended Performance and Royal Purple are all pretty good with RP probably being the best.
For oils I have long been a big fan of Redline.
I recall in testing I was involved in on BMW M30 6 cylinder engines the K&N drop is filters were awful in every respect. They had a fraction of the surface area of the MANN or other OEM equivalent and once they
got a bit dirty restricted airflow to the point where the engine would stumble on part throttle acceleration. They were great when clean as far as airflow but the reduced area made the inefficient once they got slightly dirty and on a street engine, I would
rather have the filtration over a few CFM of airflow and have to clean the filter every month.

Hmmm
Had to read this twice – how could an oil filter make a HP difference?
Ahhh – K&N “air” and oiled air filter. OK
Do you think it caught more dirt? Make the engine last longer?
Just wondering . . .
Doug
When I had my 85 with factory exhaust on a dyno in the late 90s the RWHP was around 190. FYI - I was testing out KN oil air filters vs Fram paper filters and found KN decreased HP by approximately 5hp…..
