Hmmm. Sorry I guess that one (sanding and varnishing) was out of context.

I mentioned in an earlier private message to Dennis that I recently
purchased a 1948 Chris Craft.

His comment was that I would never be seen at any of the New England Ferrari
events again as I would be too busy sanding and varnishing the boat all the
time.

Perhaps the sanding and varnishing is the reason the scanner died? That's 
probably the one warning that doesn't appear in its owner's manual, but I'm 
fairly sure that that is not recommended treatment for sensitive computer 
equipment, no matter how glossy you would like your photos to appear...
