It must be a really tough way to live. It reminds me of a case I did for an
attorney in the Northeast. His client had been hiding in a bedroom closet
with a telephone trying to dial 911 for help when the burglar found him.
Unfortunately (from a litigation perspective) for him, the burglar was unarmed
and
he had his shotgun in that closet. Much of the argument was made that he
retreated to that specific closet because it contained a firearm which he had
planned to use. Common sense prevailed but it was a lesson to all. The bottom
line, though not the topic of this discussion, is that the time to fight for
the right to protect yourself, and your family, home and possessions is before
you face the critical decision as to the use of deadly force. Of course,
"good luck" in MA, way to close to N.Y. where if you shoot someone armed with
a
screwdriver attacking you on a commuter train you will be charged with
criminal possession of a handgun.

But, alas perhaps we digress too far into the vast wasteland of political
opinion and offend someone so I guess I'll just limit myself to commentary as
to
the specific utility and functionality of specific firearms though I would
like to hear from Brian as to the circumstances that he experiences that would
require the carrying of a "backup" firearm as a civilian. I've never
discussed this particular topic with any of my clients, or "temporary"
constituents
and perhaps I should be doing so. I do advocate spending time at the range
so that clearing a malfunction becomes second nature, and the opinion that a
revolver such as an S&W 640 might be more suitable to keep at hand if they
don't want to take the time to become familiar with the firearm or if they
feel
that they may not be able to exercise enough self-control (not in a
"judgement" sense, but in the context of a "panic" type reaction) in crisis
situations
involving personal safety. In most instances the clearing procedure for a
double action revolver is instinctive, it is composed of simply pulling the
trigger again and again until the firearm discharges.

And, of course this isn't the correct forum for an abstract from an upcoming
peer review journal article I am writing in reference to the mental and
physical ability of an untrained, or marginally trained individual,
particularly
one without military training or combat experience to actually accurately aim
and fire their weapon in close combat knowing that the discharge of the
firearm will, in all probability result in the death or permanent disabling of
another individual.
