I am afraid you are correct. There is no substitute for seat time.
Books can't teach feel, proper reactions, and racecraft (although
they claim they can). Some of the concepts promoted in books is just
nonsense when you apply them to the real world of racing. (I have
some fundamental disagreements with the Bondourant methods).
However, I have developed my own racing style which is distinctive
from what is taught. I've been fortunate to have been able to run
against several former GP drivers who have commented favorably on my
unique style.
I guess what I am saying is get seat time. Develop your race sense with the help of judicious coaching (not a school, but one-on-one) from a pro. That seems to be the best way to improve.
This is also why it is so BLOODY expensive to go racing. There are no shortcuts. You actually need to race the car / motorcycle / boat / aircraft frequently to advance.

My track instructor at Pocono this past weekend mentioned, approvingly,"Speed Secrets" by Bentley. I believe he has written several with
variations of that title, but I think the instructor was referring to the
first one. Any opinions on the value of that one -- or any other book for
"green" drivers?
Books?!?!?! We don't need no stinking books!!! Do more track driving and
less reading!!!! LOL Chase someone down who is faster. When you finally
pass him, look for the next victim. Just can't beat the school of hard knocks.
If you can do it in a "slower" car, congrats. You are now a better driver!

(For those of you who took the comment above the wrong way... flame suit is
on!)
