I used an '88 Rolls as my family daily driver for a few years in the
2001-2004 timeframe. Really wonderful family car. But having a
pre-war coachbuilt Rolls like I have now....it really is special. My
car's original owner is a founding member of the Mayflower Society,
his Grandfather was governor of Connecticut in the late 1700s, and
that guy's dad was a framer of the Constitution and the third US
Supreme Court Justice. Another great grandfather is a guy named Noah
Webster. My car was used at the UN (Lake Success) and has 12
cylinders with plenty torque (although still nearly 20 seconds from
0-60...but that was probably pretty darn good for a 6000 pound car in
1939). All aluminum bodywork on ash wood...aluminum block and heads,
ride control, adjust timing at the steering wheel, jack the car up
(two or four corners at a time) while still in the car, centralized
lubrication for chassis points from within the car (press a pedal),
dual fuel pumps for reliability, 2 spark plugs per cylinder....

I love my 308 for what it is....my old dream car from middle school.
But this car (Phantom-III, "The Vantom" according to the kids) will be
the family heirloom....

I will say that after seeing the new 101EX at pebble that I have
respect for what BMW is doing with RR. The new cars are cool for what
they have been designed to do (like the mondial). I went to Cornes in
Tokyo on Friday and saw both the regular and lwb phantoms and they are
impressive. Maybe my corporate lifestyle is causing me to look at
cars from the backsest more than I used too...

Or it could be that I can't get my fat ass in some ferraris now!
