While working at the L.A. Herald-Examiner, I heard the story about Dennis Wilson's missing 1960's Ferrari GT-250. Where I got the story, I'll explain later. I was always interested in The Manson Family, and good friend Bill Farr, who was covering the story for Hearst got me front row tickets to Charlie's trial whenever I could go. During the trial, the girls lived an a VW camper parked in front of the court house. After court, Bill and I would stop by with a case of cold beer and chit-chat with them. (a lot of chit...not much chat). Bill was there to gather inside stuff for his stories, and me? I was there for cheap thrills! <G> I had met most of them earlier when I went to see David Allen Coe (The Original Rinestone Cowboy) perform at the Topanga Corral, a dive in the hills between Malibu and the valley. And who was DAC's opening act? None other than that 'Loveable Little Guy' Charlie. While Charlie was on stage, the girls were turning tricks out in the parking lot. If he b ombed that night, at least the girls made him some money. Anyway, while drinking beer with Sandy and Squeeky, they told me about the time when Charlie and the girls were living with Wilson on Beverly Hills, and family member 'Clem' borrowed Dennis's Ferrari to take for a spin in the Hollywood Hills. Poor Clem then runs out of gas, leaves the Ferrari in the hills and walks home. Dennis went to retreive it...but it was gone. Never to be seen again? That broke the camel's back for Wilson. The lost Ferrari plus the $500.00 every two week doctor bills for VD treatments for all were too much to handle. Kind of reminds you of the James Dean 550 Spyder caper. Too bad Dennis pulled the old Natalie Wood trick before I could talk to him. I moved to Tucson in 1985, then to Baja Arkansas and lost all my L.A. contacts. (except you, Doug) So if any Lister has ANY info or updates on this, please let me know.
