I have experienced the "let go" turbo twice. Once as a driver on an MR2 turbo (~55,000 miles). Once as a passenger in an F40 (~8,000 miles).

In both cases, the turbo oil seals let go without much warning. Once they did let go, boy was it a sight to behold. Most turbo rebuilding services don't charge that much, but the labor to get the turbo(s) out can be a real cost factor (easy on an F40, difficult on a 300ZX TT).

I have a friend with a 91 300ZX TT (~85,000 miles). It still runs just fine.

It may go another 100,000 miles before a turbo failure or 100... there's no way to know. How hard was the car driven? How often was the oil changed? Did the owner let the turbos idle down? etc. etc.

YMMV,

Subject: [MB] OT: Z32 300ZX turbo lifespan?

Thinking of getting a '91 300ZX twin turbo. Car is mechanically great, has hail damage on hood/bonnet. T tops, no leakage, oil return lines from turbos just replaced. I drove it, shifts great, sounds same. Question: When will the turbos go, how will I know when they're on their way out, or can they, with proper care and idling after a "nice" drive, last almost forever?
