Larry,
Interesting post, and I don't disagree with you, but voting records are readily available on the internet 24 hrs. a day. I believe you can also purchase a printed book each week/month/year from the Gov't. I have also seen House and Congressional votes displayed live in a C-Span channel more than once during the day.

Hi Ken - and others,
I was born in Orange, Tx - got back to Port Arthur in 73 to work on the then new Texaco refinery - left again in 75 or 76 and haven't made it back since - sadly, the states I've lived in (Va, NJ, SC, SC, Va, Tn, Il (yuck), Md, and Va have all gone in the same direction - left - when the Feds stopped following the Bill of Rights (remember states rights ?- it's what started the civil war -) and decided it knew what was best for us. It's been downhill since - for everyone. Now, things are changed at a federal level and no one bothers to mention the 10th Amendment which says:<<The powers not [specifically] delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people. >>

I wonder, just what "right" has been reserved to the people? Seems like they all belong to the state of fed to do with as they wish.

Unfortunately, the lawyers have managed to turn and twist everything so the words no longer mean anything - but what they want them to mean. The Commerce clause has been bastardized to mean *anything* they want so that me giving my friend a piece of bubble gum can be construed as "Commerce" and the fed can put itself in-between the transaction.

It's a shame we couldn't keep the good parts of the things that have happened over the past 50 years and toss the unintended consequences - like keep civil rights and toss preferences. But that won't happen and the scum that rises to the top of the pond to be elected only continue to make things worse.

Everytime they try to "simplify" the tax code they add 30-40,000 words of legalese that no one understands - not even the IRS. In the end, the tax code is still used to make the public do things in certain ways.

There's so many things wrong with the way the Govt is being run I wonder if it can be fixed - certainly not by the caliber of men who dominate the parties. Even the freedom of speech was tossed out by the Supremes when they were asked to rule on the provision of the last Campaign Finance Reform law which says grassroots organizations cannot publicize the politicians voting records and positions on important issues during the 60 days prior to an election! That means the groups you & I belong to so they can keep us informed of the things important to us have been muzzled - the politicians obviously don;t want us to know how they vote or what their position is. Of course, the main stream media is excluded. That way, only half the story gets told.

Sorry about the rant - this thread touched a nerve. ;-) "Don't Mess With Texas!!"

Steve:

I got to Texas back in 1978. After color TV, but before Algore
invented the internet and global warming. Soon I was going out for
dinner with some friends; we met at someone's house. On the way out
the door I am asked if I want a "go-cup".

"What is a go-cup?"

Turns out it was a drink in a plastic cup to have while you were on
your way to dinner. See, Texas had no law against drinking and
driving. The law specified that you could not drive drunk. But there
was nothing against sipping a cool one on the commute home.

This was back in the days when citizens were still assumed to have
some semblance of personal responsibility. Before point .08,and
Hysterical Mothers Against Anything Remotely Construed As Fun.

Over the holidays I drove through California. The roads are riddled
with intrusive lighted signs advising drivers to call and report any
drunk drivers. Of course, anyone who has gone too heavy on the
cologne is going to blow .08, beer or no beer, and now the populace
are being enlisted as snitches.

It sucks. I hate the Nanny State. All Osama and friends have to do is
wait. We are pissing away America completely unaided by outside
interference. Am I in favor of drunk driving- hell no. Do I think
there are any less drunks out there in WussWorld then there were in
manly prehistory?

Hell no.
