Lash,

It appears you are having similar problems to what I had in my last TransAm.
I loved that car and felt invincible in it. I drove it like it was stolen
every single day. I am the first to admit, I was very very hard on that
car. I eventually sold the car at 60K miles because of issues; I felt like
it was having a major breakdown every month. I have missed that car more
than any other car I have ever owned, I truly regret selling it.

So, my advice is, if you really love the car, just keep fixing it or you
will regret it. However, another option is to trade it for a similar car
with lower mileage. Or better yet, upgrade to the new Mustang Shelby GT500.
It has to be the best deal out there. $41,675.00 gets you 500hp. I know
there are a lot on this List that poo-poo domestic cars, but this car can't
be touched by any other car manufacturer for similar money.

Hey Ken: The only 'Bernie' story I have is when der Frau and I went to the
Austrian GP in the mid-1990's and stayed in Graz, about 50 k's north of the
former Yogoslavia. They were just finishing up one of their civil wars, and
one night before the race, a man came up to me and offered to sell me a
Soviet made RPG for $100 usd. I passed on it that night, only to have Bernie
fly over me at 300 ft in his private chopper while I was still in the track
parking lot. I knew it was Bernie because the track announcer was telling
the crowd of his arrival at that time. DAMN, I would have given $1,000 to
have that evil little troll in the cross-hairs!

First off, this is meant as no disrespect to Michael Sheehan. He was just
documenting what some other guys were actually doing. I respect Michael's
opinion a lot and view him as a very valuable member of the Ferrari
community.

Ok, around 2 years ago we had a discussion about the 550. At the time it
was said by a few owners and others that the 550s and 575s were by far the
most daily drivable Grand Touring 2 seater Ferraris ever made. It was also
pointed out that the maintenance was actually cheaper than the maintenance
on the V8 counterparts due to the ease in which the timing belts could be
changed and general engine access. And that the maintenance costs are way
way cheaper than the maintenance costs on an older V12 car (the specific
example was the TR and 512TR series of cars). This was also confirmed by a
few Ferrari dealerships that I have been in. I was told that the 30K
maintenance on a 550 is significantly cheaper than the 30K on a 360, 355,
348, or even a 328, not to mention a TR or 512TR.

So, either this car is not indicative of the typical 550, or these guys just
had way more money than brains (this is the answer I pick).

Ok, since it has been a little while since this was discussed, is the 550
cheaper, basically the same, or more expensive to own than any other Ferrari
and why?

Sounds like the original owner beat the crap out of the car without
any mechanical sensibility. None of my Ferraris have required
anything like this kind of attention.

Was the car warmed-up after a cold start? Probably not, hence oil
leaks.
Ranch in Ojai? Hmmmmm...probably drove it off-road without a care in
the world.

The original owner belongs in a Toyota Avalon, not a Ferrari.

Jason:

May I be so bold as to propose some edits?

High maintenance cars with high performance = fun
Low maintenance cars with high performance = still fun, but extremely rare

High maintenance cars with low performance = never boring, but a nightmare
which should be disposed of as quickly as possible
Low maintenance cars with low performance = boring

And NOW you can swap in "women" for "cars" above and it's all still true. :)

Steve

Humm, are we assuming here? My old boss, George Hearst Jr. had a 5,000 acre
ranch in Ojai too. Plus a modest little 80,000 acre spread near San Simeon,
overlooking the Pacific. You might have heard if it. ... And believe it or
not, most of the roads, to and from, were paved. I took my solid rod,
roller-bearing crank 356 Porsche up there a few times as his guest, and it
never saw dirt. Hell, I even hear there are a few paved roads here in Baja
Arkansaw! Who would have 'thunk' it?

ponder this analogy some more.

Dave,
Check your numbers - a stock C6 Corvette is faster than a GT500 0-60 and
1/4 mile. A Vette is about $10K more, but buy a used 2005/2006 and let
someone else take the $10K difference and you still get warranty! Plus,
the new Vettes are made 10X better than Ford could ever think of. And
$41K for a solid rear axle car?

The problem with that 550 was the owner took it to the dealer with an
open checkbook and the service dept, was happy to take advantage o the
situation. If two rear tires are $800.00 there is no way a fluid and
filter change (a 15K service) should cost $1,500.00+.

Hey Dave: Believe me ... in my 70 years here on earth, I've generally found
the the high maintenance, slightly wacky women are the most challenging and
fun. I would never marry one, but they usually could perform more tricks on
a king size bed than a tribe of 20 monkeys could do on a 30 foot clothes
line! And I've got the scars to prove it.
