". . .in his brand new 'dune buggy,' a Porsche 911 with 50 miles on the
odometer, doing red-line in 5th gear on Hwy. 395 in the California desert."

Pat was a heck of fellow - of course a newspaper man par excellence. The above
car was a 68 BRG with, black or tan interior. First five speed I ever drove.
The car later lost its chain tensioner and started making, in Pat's words, an
ice crusher sound. We found Ritchie Ginther at Riverside sitting on the tail
gate of his tow car - no Simi trucks and trailers in those days, and asked him
what it was. He said he didn't know - never heard that sound before. Well, he
wouldn't have - he had solids in his race cars. Not long after that - on 395
again - no doubt on the way to Red Mountain to do some dove shooting - the left
rear of the motor departed the rest of the car along with a lot of oil. I
forget how Pat got back home. Shortly after that - the dreaded chain tensioner
was touted as the 911s Achilles Heel and not effectively healed until the
Carrera chain tensioner pressure fed gizmo.

Hey Paul: "Never believe?" I'm shocked and saddened, my friend. To say the
least. Just ask GTS Doug about some of our 'escapades.' Trips to Vegas,
afternoon pressbox fun at Riverside Raceway and Laguna Seca, and traveling with
our wackey,out-of-control friend Pat with his trusty Government Colt .45. in
his brand new 'dune buggy,' a Porsche 911 with 50 miles on the odometer, doing
red-line in 5th gear on Hwy. 395 in the California desert.

  Yer sad pal, Ferrari Bubba

Never believe a word you say but love to read 'em - Willi, you're got a rare
talent, consider a book. Or even a compendium of your posts.
