Yes, the starter can be removed in the car, but it's quite a feat of
contortion. Make damn sure to disconnect the battery for you even
think of proceeding. Disconnect the wires from the starter first, as
this will be harder later in the process. There's one or two wires
that plug into connectors, and the large battery/alternator lug is
attached with a nut (13mm?). Remove three bolts from the front of the
bell housing (13mm). Remove one bolt on the back bracket that holds
the starter to the side of the engine (14mm or 17mm depending on
type). It seems like with some series of turns the starter can come
out one side or the other... sorry, it's been too long since I've done it.
If the motor is not clean, it's a very messy job, as you have to reach up and around a frame rail, the headers, and parts of the left engine bank.
When you take the starter to the rebuild shop, don't let them screw you because it's off a Ferrari. I get those rebuilt easily for $100-$120 USD. Don't know how that compares to NZ, but it's a very standard Bosch starter.

I want to take my starter motor out and check it's and service it... my question is, can the starter motor come out without taking the whole car apart??
I think I can get at it from underneath but will it come out past the headers??
Thought it best to ask before I tried it!
