Tom - What is your guru trying to accomplish? Pre cat O2 sensors generally
give an average reading of the stuff coming down the pipe. (Post cat O2's
just tell if cat is any good) Why replace them?
Ever have a head gasket problem? Coolant will poison the O2 sensor plenty fast - same same for silicon - also found in red RTV [and IF you get the approved O2 sensor RTV follow instructions which may mean leaving it dry for a day or so - boooor ing].
OK, car is 10 years old. Did your guru do a test on the O2's? He sounds sophisticated so he should have DSO - digital storage oscilloscope. Rhetorical question is Can't you test an O2 with a volt meter? Sure - if you can see a jump from lean to rich in a millisecond during a snap test. Think in terms of oxygen - not fuel. High voltage = 0.9 volts or thereabouts is caused by lack of oxygen or too much fuel left over. Low voltage = 0.2 v or thereabouts is caused by too much oxygen or all the fuel was burned.
These things are plugged into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If they are sluggish, they send yesterdays news to the PCM.
Anyway Tom - I am a BIG believer in using coinciding parts: Bosch with Bosch stuff - GM with GM etc AND I would get it from the dealer for the proper application.
DOUG
Oh - PS - your car is the first year of OBD II - if the O2s send the wrong switching time you may light off that pesky MIL - malfunction indicator light.

But that's me, I could be wrong.

Subject: [Ferrari] NFC: Oxygen sensors?
Dear Listers,
In my new to me '96 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 SS (modified by SLP Engineering as an option code on the original order form) I've been having a local Camaro/Firebird guru do a laptop tune on it. We want to get a good baseline for further testing and future dyno.
He's said that it's his opinion that I should get two new pre-cat oxygen sensors. He's also heard that those made by Bosch for the application are not recommended. Anyone have opinions on what I should be looking for? He says that AC/Delco is the OEM replacement, but I'm not sure about that. I have looked up online, but (of course) am confused by application choices. I've posted on chirpthird's SS forum, but so far no response, and the Z28.com and LT1 section of the LS1 forum keeps kicking me off...
Help?
Thanks very much,
Tom Reynolds
