Subject: [Ferrari] Gone for a while...Open Road Racing....

Been off the list for a couple of years. Former employer (Federal
Government) takes a dim view of mailing lists. Now I am retired. On a
lark, I checked to see if the Ferrarilist still existed. Lo and
behold, I guess it moved, but still existed! Strange to find it. And
I recognize most of the posters. Tom seems to have moved from Arizona.
Ric Rainbolt and Brian Reagen (sp?) are silent, but nice to see the
rest of you are still posting. Don't see any of the San Diego
contingent that used to get together for lunch.

Just wondered if any of you listers would be interested in
participating in Open Road Racing. This is something that I got turned
on to back in '99 by a post on this list, and I've been doing it ever
since. Basically, Open Road Racing is a form of high speed
time-distance rally. The organizers arrange to close down a length of
highway, and cars run down the highway trying to average a certain
speed. Speed classes run from 85mph to 170mph, plus Unlimited (i.e.,
as fast as you can go). Distances vary from 90 miles of highway to 130
miles, so you really get a chance to exercise you vehicle at high speed
for long distances. These races are held on little-used two lane
secondary roads that can be closed down without undue hardship to the
locals. Races are held in west Texas and Nevada, and strongly
supported by the local officials and population.

I started running my 308 in the 105mph class in the Silver State
Classic Challenge. Then bought a Corvette and run that in the 145mph
class. It is quite an adrenalin rush to drive down the middle of a two
lane highway at 165mph and then slow to 150mph to make a corner....

Races are more social events than competitive ones. Just a bunch of
old farts like me wanting to drive their cars fast like God (and Enzo)
intended. Prize is a $5 trophy and great memories. Speed you go is
basically limited by the safety equipment you have installed. Field is
dominated by Corvettes, but there is a wide variety of cars. Always
Panteras, Ferraris, Lambos....even a couple of Dodge Neons and Saturn Ions.

If anyone is interested, check out these websites:

www.openroadracing.com (US Autobahn Series)
www.bborr.com (Big Bend Open Road Race)
www.sscc.us (Silver State Classic Challenge)

Of course, this is a totally politically incorrect form of sport,
contributing to global warming and the demise of the species.....but a
hell of a lot of fun while we are still here....
