I (or rather, lister Michael Scallion) retrofitted my 1985 Corvette with
a ZF 6-speed from a ZR-1. They are pretty easy to get rebuilt now for
around the same $1800 mentioned. They are supposedly exceptionally
rugged, although I was warned by the rebuilder to be careful about slave
cylinders as hydraulic failure can cause more serious problems. They are
in pretty heavy demand for retrofits like mine. I really like the
transmission. It is exceptionally light in action and smooth for the
power it can take. It's also a monster. Sitting next to a T-56 it made
the T-56 look like a kid's toy.

Waaay off topic - but a couple of comments on that early ZF 6speed.

When it came out in, uh, 1989 I think, GM told us to warn the customer
against missing shifts - or more specifically selecting the wrong gear.
They said the syncros in this German box were so good that it would slip
into 1st gear at 140mph without any resistance whatsoever. The result
would be a clutch exploded into a zillion bits.

Altho you couldn't repair them, they offered an exchange program. The
price was reasonable by Ferrari standards, but a bit pricy for the Chevy
buyer. Seems it was around $1800, I think. The price for a new box
(not exchange) was around $8000. I have no idea if there is still any
such exchange offered.
