HI Guys,
In my search for the right 512TR I have been offered a set of "like new"
512TR luggage, fully embossed and still in there drawstring bags. Does
anyone have
an opinion as to what this is worth? Whats its value roughly in the states
in
dollars?
I may not use it but if I buy it I want to make sure I am not overpaying
in
case I want to sell it again.

Howdy, Britt!
Great topic. I've always wondered about the fallacy of the custom fitted
luggage. Aside from a few cocoa puffs like SteveJ, who really uses these
things? One pays an arm and a leg for them, but using them results in
scuffing and wear (that's what luggage is for), that invariably diminishes
the value of the luggage. So is it worth a few hundred dollars in
depreciation to use heavy, bulky leather luggage (about which you will
inevitably worry)? Or just continue to use the standard ballastic nylon
overnight bags that you already use and about which you must give not a
whit
of concern?
Alternatively, you buy the luggage, wrap it in plastic and store it in the
dark confines of the back closet, never to see the light of day until you
sell the car and then the luggage. Even assuming that you can sell it for
the price you paid, is that worth the opportunity cost of your investment
(e.g., what you would have earned had you invested it elsewhere), solely
for
the self-satisfaction of knowing that you are in possession of the
matching
luggage?
I guess this is why I'm also mystified of the totemic-allure of sports
memorabilia (though, admittedly, had I there wherewithal, I too would own
a
Senna helmet).

Britt,
I purchased a set not too long after I purchased my 512TR. And -- who
would imagine? -- it has been stored in thedark confines of a closet, in
the cloth cases, rarely having seen the light of day (and has never been
used).
I will search my records and try to let you know what I paid (certainly

To me, as a non-Ferrari owner, the way I see buying the Ferrari custom
fitted luggage is one of a couple of reasons, depending on the buyer. A,
you're super rich and will use the luggage regardless of the damage they
may
suffer so the expensive luggage can be used and "seen", or B you've bought
the luggage in the hopes of selling them with the car in the hopes of
elevating the value of the car. This kind of thing happens in the case of
ultra rare cars such as a limited production model - like a Lusso,
SuperAmerica, 275, etc. When a car such as those are offered with the
custom luggage, along with the original sales paperwork - which is even
more
valuable if owned by a "Celebrity" (to me that would be Stirling Moss or
Scarfiotti, Von Trips, etc - OTOH, someone like P Hilton would detract
from
the value) ;-), the value is increased farther. But the later models
like we're talking about here, with the exception of an F40, the cars
*might* not be rare enough to see elevated prices due to the luggage.
Then
again, it can't hurt.
Naturally, IMHO, YMMV. ;-)
Have a nice week -

HI Guys,
In my search for the right 512TR I have been offered a set of "like new"
512TR luggage, fully embossed and still in there drawstring bags. Does
anyone have
an opinion as to what this is worth? Whats its value roughly in the states
in
dollars?
I may not use it but if I buy it I want to make sure I am not overpaying
in
case I want to sell it again.

Dennis is (as usual) 100% correct. I really DO use the things. And I have
the scuffs to prove it! The good news is that Leatherique also works on
bags.
I see the luggage in the same way I see the cars - they are expensive, fun
to use, unique, and are a source of pride. They are also just like the
cars
in that regular maintenance will help them look their best, although
anything that is well used will never look brand new. The best you can go
for is well-cared for. So in that sense, I truly do have the luggage that
"matches" the cars. :)

Vty,

Hey Britt: Yea, I've had the same dream since the early 1960's. Mine would
be climbing the Stelvio Pass in my 250TDF, fitted luggage on the shelf
behind us,?with my 'close' friend Eva Herzagova sitting beside me as
navigator on our way to Oktoberfest in Munich?from the Italian Riviera.
Ach, the good life.

Yep,
Its a fallacy and makes no sense....so why do I want it? Maybe its the
dream
of living the way the car was designed, crossing Europe in a big GT
Ferrari....Still you are right, I would most likely use duffel bags which
are
lighter
and easier to jam in everywhere!

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! It totally worked!
Man, I miss these commercials. But I guess by today's standards, some big
dude busting down walls would be labelled a terrorist and whisked off to
Gitmo.
And there's no WAY Hawaiian Punch could run their old commercials. Schools
and parents would be sued for sure. I still remember going up to other 13
year olds and saying "Hey! How's about a Hawaiian Punch....?"
SMACK!
And then BOTH of us would laugh!
