Subject: [Ferrari] How It's MAde

Just caught most of a program called "How's It's Made" on the Discovery
channel - as the name implies this program follows different things being
manufactured.

Today they followed a engine being created and assembled. I missed the
beginning so I didn't see what the engine would be used in but it was a V6
with 4 cams(!!) Everything was assembled by robots with the exceotion of
the rear plate - a robot applied a sealant but a human put the rear plate in
place and used a machine with 4 sockets spinning at once that tightened the
bolts and torqued them.. Everything else was installed by robots - which
really amazed me. I've built a few engines and getting the crank and con
rods lined up to mate was always a time consuming operation - as was the
timing chain and related components -- for me anyway. The robot indexed
everything and the parts went together making it all look easy!

Anyway ---- watching the machining of the crank followed by its
balancing was really amazing - hopefully some of you Tivo'd it or maybe
it'll air again.

Take care.
