Tom:
Was going west down the hill into Tularosa and then south past the pistachio orchards and the White Sands up over the ridge to Las Cruces, NM. All of Tularosa is one big speed trap. The speed limits are unreasonably low - like 10 or 15 MPH. The streets are littered with unmarked white Caprices cruising 10 mph in a 15 mph zone just saying "pass me, go ahead and pass me". If you do you will get a ticket quicker than a cat can lick it's ass.
Two thirds of the town is a school zone where you are supposed to get out and push the car while someone walks ahead waving a red lantern. Last time through I was in a Porsche Turbo, in convoy with another guy driving a Camaro SS. We stood out like Flavio Briatore in the girl's locker room. I had to drive 5 under, slipping the clutch to maintain forward momentum all the way.
Their final trick is the town ends but the city limits don't. If you exceed 20 mph for the next 2.5 miles of uninhabited wasteland you can count on a personal welcome to Tularosa. Just don't even go there.

Ken,
Was that on the way to Alamogordo or from Alamogordo? Were you
heading into "town" from the pass or going towards the pass? (IIRC)

Hey Dennis that's why Steve's F40 is so dirty. The cops feel guilty
giving a ticket to some poor stiff who can't even afford to wash his
Ferrari. Actually, truth is, every time Steve gets the hose out to
clean it he ends up running naked through the sprinkler instead. That
boy just can't focus!
Fwiw the Economics Dept at George Mason is chaired by my personal hero, Walter WIlliams. I sense his fine hand in this. Of course we all knew the only thing speed kills is the town budget deficit - sudden deceleration is another matter altogether. There are certain small towns in Texas so notorious for this form of activity that instead of paying property taxes, the residents receive dividend checks from the Dept. of Public Safety. But the worst speed trap in America, hands down, is Tularosa, NM. Just don't go there.

.ps The NY Times? I'm surprised the article didn't read Speeding and Your Personal Carbon Footprint.

Economic View Welcome, Stranger. Here's a Speeding Ticket.
