Great points, Mike.

I too have enjoyed the Off-Topic posts over the years. It's never been my
assertion that these threads aren't interesting to some, perhaps many,
folks. It's just that these OT threads can put off those subscribers at the
margin - those who joined for Ferrari content. Some of us like all these
threads; but ALL of us have an interest in things Ferrari, or else we would
not have joined in the first place.

Hence the real reason why FChat is thriving.

Sure, adding photos is a big benefit, but the real reason that content there
is growing massively, I think, is that members can CHOOSE to read (and
participate in) what they are really interested in, and skip the rest.

Only interested in F1 and racing? Got it.
Have a technical question? Got it.
Want to know what to look for when buying a 348? Got it.
Want to see pics of Ferrari with mostly naked girls? Got it.
Planning a local drive in New York? Got it.
Share a video of dogs skateboarding? Got it.

And the beauty of it is that if you're interested in only 3 of the above,
you only need to see those three, without wading through ALL the different
posts (or even the subject lines). Since I'm pretty sure I have no interest
in, say, regional activity in Chicagoland, I don't bother. And I can skip
the off-topic discussions, or the personal wealth/finance, or the
collectibles discussion.

Years ago, Steve Cook tried a brief experiment wherein he subdivided the
FerrariList into, effectively, "Ferrari ONLY", "Tech", and "Everything", or
something like that. He tossed it up, but no one really followed up, and it
died on the vine.

It's great to see lurkers like you (and a couple of others who responded to
me privately) come out to say how much they enjoy the list, but do keep in
mind that this is just seeing the positives - by definition, we won't see
the negatives, those members who just lose interest and drop off.

BTW, I have a GT-R on order. Yeah, it's too heavy, but faster than a 997
turbo around the 'Ring? And before the LEGIONS of Skyline enthusiasts tune
the MF? I'll bet that within 6 months, I'll be able to get a safe 650 hp
out of it. And smoke those 360CHs at the track... :-)

vty,

--Dennis

Dennis,

I am shocked that you could ask the question? Of course we (the list) are
that sad...
As a Long time lurker and seldom poster (sold my "shitbox" 348 many years
ago and now drive a "shitbox" M3 and am debating picking up a Lotus Elise).
What makes the list really great (compared to some car nut lists) are the
annual discussions on guns, watches, home theater, TIVO hacking, bid
sniping, and of course the commentary from Clyde (every list needs a Clyde)
and a few others. I mean discussions about racing, brake pads, interesting
places to drive, places to get decent work done on your car and the best
engine oil for a water cooled vs air cooled engine are all well and good,
but really how much do you need to know about engine oil?

The list is "dying" for other reasons. These likely include an aging list
population (personally with 2 kids now, and no free time, the idea of
sticking an F car in my garage and not driving it doesn't appeal any more
than if I did drive it and had to give up half my stuff) and a lack of new
owners who know how to use the internet (anyone see Lance Briggs Murcielago
on I94?, Do you think he will pick up a Ferrari to replace the Lambo?).

Lewis Hamilton's bit on Top Gear was fantastic. Loved how he was singing a
bit while driving and some of his other comments "54 mph! That is crap".
The GT-R is a boat, 3900 lbs? It is hugely overweight, and if I wanted to
drive a video game I would drive a video game.

BR,
Mike

Really, are we this sad? Are we going to see lengthy dissertations from
surely-duly-accredited-authorities on why such-and-such a caliber is
better/worse instead of talking about, oh, I don't know: Top Gear has a
review of the Scuderia v Nissan GT-R, Lewis Hamilton tries to beat the Stig,
Schumacher blows off Massa's wedding, and this is what we're reduced to?

No wonder why this list is dying.
