Not sure I can take credit for that line, but it certainly applies.

The other thing I failed to mention is to know the market as best you
can. Pay attention to dealer and Ferrari Market Letter prices but
understand the fairly large disconnect in the Ferrari world between
asking prices and selling prices. Talk to as many owners as you can and
find out what they paid - most will happily share that number when they
understand that you are conscientiously shopping and learning the
market, rather than the same question which is annoying when asked out a
pickup truck window at the gas station. The price I paid for my TR in
1997 was a "Clyde" price for a perfectly nice car. But to get to that
point, I did endure a number of private sellers and dealers literally
laughing in my face when I made a realistic offer. In one case, a dealer
sat on a car I had made an offer on for six months before eventually
calling me back and accepting my price (although I had already bought a
different car by then). My point is that you should know your budget and
know the market as best you can, and then buy the newest, best car you
can afford.

Oft repeated advice here, but that's because it works!

Excellent post, Charles. What is the phrase you used about using your
head and trying to separate emotion from the car search? Something like
(but not verbatim, I'm sure), "Lock your heart in your wife's jewelry
box and don't take it out until the car is yours."?
Just trying to remember...
