Actually, the FBI recently completed a study that came to that conclusion. But you;re right that Prof Ltt 1st came up with that.

The Govt Accounting Office (GAO) also came up with an estimate of 1million to 3 million occurances. It's hard to get a firm nummber because crimes prevented are not normally reported. (A gang of tough guys approached me carrying bats, knives and pipes so I pulled my jacket back and they turned around - kind of thing).

Additionally - and this has received precious little coverage - the FBI found gun laws had not prevented criminals from getting guns one bit! Forone thing, ciminal ignore laws - that's why they're called criminals! Duh!.

Also, criminals did not go to gun shows or gun stores to buy guns. They bought them on the street (so-called Black market) or stole them.

But these findings do not square with the media's preconceived agenda so little was heard.

Factoid: I hope I get this right, as I heard it on the radio, but have
not verified the statistic. According to the FBI, 2.5 million crimes
were deescalated last year by the brandishing or use of a handgun.

Close Ric. You are probably citing the study by Prof. John Lott, from his
book "More Guns, Less Crime". This was published in 2000, and based on
statistics he compiled from 1988 to 1994 (through 1996 in his revised
addition). His book found that indeed, having guns seems to reduce crime
more than it creates or causes crime. It was withstood scholarly review by
both sides of the subject, and has been the basis of much discussion since
its publication.
