Phil:

Spend a couple of bucks extra and get yourself a decent medium or large
frame revolver. I recommend a Smith and Wesson model 66, 686, 696 - all are
357 magnum (but you can use .38s if you want to save money and have less
recoil). Here, in Florida, a good-quality new gun would run $6-650.
Pre-owned can be had for $5-600. Note that prices vary widely from state to
state. Also, most stores haggle - about 10-15% from their displayed prices.

There are lesser weapons out there, Taurus for example, that are probably
fine and come with excellent warranties, but - in my opinion - you are
better off with the "real deal" - S&W, Colt - which will never require
service.

Avoid coatings like bluing, nickel or chrome and get a stainless weapon.
They are easier to clean and maintain - so you don't have to worry about
corosion. And KEEP IT CLEAN, OILED , LOADED and READY.

IMHO - For home protection you are best off with a revolver - less things to
go wrong in a high-stress situation, like an intruder who is in your home.
And, another round is always just another trigger pull away. Semi-autos are
nice, but they can: fail, jam or outherwise not fire and then all you have
is a club.

Also, while I am tossing in my .02 - go with something big bore = .357 or
bigger (44!, 50!?!?!). The idea is single-shot stopping power. Even a
graze with a bullet that big will put an intruder on his ass. Start messing
around with 9s, 38 autos, 32s and - god forbid - 22s and you are in a
position where you may very well have to inflict a mortal wound to stop a
seriously committed intruder.
