Thank you Britt and yes pilots do understand maintenance their lives depend on
it in every sense of the word. I do believe that the engine cycle of warming
the entire engine and drive train is vitally important to longevity in a car or
anything mechanical. Modern day oils have hepled dramatically across the board
in this regard.

It is tempting to buy a car with so few miles if it has been stored properly
and is not rusted out because it is as near as I may get to a "new" Ferrari. I
agree what you say about being careful but lets be honest, I have bought many
cars with loads of miles that had their share of problems as well from previous
owners who not only drove them but also tried to repair them (often on the
cheap) and that brings a whole new load of issues so i think there is good and
bad. Would I buy a car from Clyde? Heck YES but then pilots have a great idea
of what maintenance is. Would I buy an 80,000 mile car from Paddy O'Riley when
I have no idea how carefully he drove it or took care of it instead of a 10,000
mile garage queen? Ummm, probably not.

On a separate note, I wonder if the newer generation of Ferraris, (550s and
newer)  are better at sitting than the older ones? And I do wonder how much a
car has to used to keep it from being a complete minefield if it is low miles
and 10 years old?

The UK market does not like cars Ferraris that have more than 20k miles on
them. Sad but a fact. Makes it very very hard to sell a car at all that has
even 30k miles on it but that is of course helpful when you are looking to buy
and don't mind. BTW the 512TR and 550 market are priced almost exactly the same
now for cars with 30k miles (never seen a 512TR over here with more than 30k
miles actually) so that's gonna be a hard choice to make in the future.

I here ypu Britt but if ypu buy a car with low miles that has been stored you
have to ask yourself has it been stored properly? Otherwise you will be buying
a museum piece nice to look at but it will not run! I have over 80K on my 93
512 TR and when I decide to sell I will sell it to only someone who can
appreciate that the car has been used not just washed and waxed!

The sad thing is that when you look at Ebay right now there are 550s and 575s
that are 4yrs and older with no miles on them that are rotting.

It is like buying a used house that no one has been living in. The frame is
there but that's it.

I have recently looked at a '91 Mondial T Cab with 10,000 miles. The owner
works in Singapore so the car has been stored long term. He has driven it once
in 4 years and now is wanting to sell it. Priced the same as a mid-level
328GTS.
BTW it is very very difficult to sell a Ferrari with miles on it over here.
For anything upto 10 years old if it has more than 20k most dealers and
independents won't touch it. One of them told me that after 20k miles the
people
wanting to buy just evaporate.

It's  good to see we're "Drivers" here!   As you said, it's better to  drive
them than let them sit & rot - there's a sweet spot though of low  miles but
not miles that are too low - less than 1000 miles in 4-5 years is  way too low.
OTOH, the MB I bought early last year - a 91 with 99k on it  or approx 7000
mi per year.  I did some checking and the owner drove it  3-5 miles a day back
& forth to work and lunch.

IMO that's low miles - but enough to keep things from rotting from
under-use.  I replaced some stuff - mostly regular maintanence items and  my
wife
stated driving it to work on a 110 mi RT of mostly 70 mph  driving.  After 6
months
of that it ran perfectly and all the rubber,  plastic and other stuff is
still young enough to be in perfect  condition.

There's a place called www.Sloancars.com who  specializes in ultra low
mileage cars (mostly Porsches) and asks high dollar  for them - like an 87 959
with
~4000 miles on it.   Total waste of  money IMO - as you say, cars are meant to
be driven!

You're probably right about the Ferrari being on Consignment at The Stable -
while the owner and his agents still try to sell it.

Have a nice  weekend -
