Hey Matt/Mike: If y'all are talking about Hazard County Kentucky, that's where my Grandpappy, Robert E. Hill was born in 1891. (he went by his middle name, Emmett) I'm not saying the family was poor, but he had to quit school at the age of 11 to help support it by working in the coal mines. He never saw indoor plumbing, paved streets,? a car, or electric lights until he was almost a man. His 1st job in the mines was to feed and take care of both thr mules and canarys. Mine safety was non-existent in those days, and he thought it wasn't a matter of if, but when. So at the age of 25, he packed up his family in a Model T Ford and came out to California to seek his riches. He always said the the 'T' was so underpowered, that he had to put it in reverse and back over some parts of the Rocky Mountains.I don't know about that. <g> It was an easy switch for him to go from the coal in Kentucky to oil in California. He worked his way up to being a driller for Union Oil (in charge of the whole drilling rig that he was working on) before Union Oil dropped it's drilling operations just after WW2. After that, he and some other ex-union Oil drillers and management got together and formed Occidential Petroleum. He bought 3,500 shares @$1 a share. He stayed active for a little while as Tool Pusher (in charge of the drilling operations of the entire oil field, but got tired of it and retired. He was called 'The Fisherman,' because his specialty was going fishing down a 10,000 foot shaft and retreving a $50,000 dollar drill bit that had fallen off in the drilling process. To cut to the chase, Occidental signed contracts not only to drill all of Union Oil's wells, but at one time had exclusive drilling rights for all of Saudi Arabia. The stock soared, split many times, and grandpa was able to devote the rest of his life smoking Camels, playing pool, drinking, buying new Oldsmobiles, and chasing pretty young womens. <g> Believe me, Jed Campett had nothing on him. As a kid, I remember the great 'Hazard County' breakfasts he used to make. Eggs over easy, a nice slab of smoked ham, biscuits and gravy, sliced red, or fried green tomatos, and hash browns, washed down with a couple pots of hot black coffee. All der Frau fixes me in the morning is my usual bowl of gruel after handing me my banana and telling me to "Sit and Spin!" Oh, the humanity!
