Hi Dave,
That kind of problem is usually caused by a missing detent ball - one of those 10 cent parts needing a few hundred $'s in labor to install ;-)

That is funny, I had just the opposite problem. I use to have an old
Mustang that would jump out of 3rd gear when you let off of the gas. The
solution (for a few years) was to just keep my hand on the shifter, keeping
slight pressure on it and thereby holding it in gear.

In fact I don't touch the shifter unless I am shifting, not to minimize wear but rather, because I grew up driving (and still drive) old British sports cars that would jump out of gear from this same pressure. Just an anti-habit.
