Clyde -

We're not talking up/down, if you rest your hand on the lever in such  
a fashion as to put a fore/aft load on the shifter, that force is  
transmitted directly to the forks.

Also, don't say that the shift gate will prevent this, it won't. The  
exposed gate on the 3x8 is more for appearance. You can remove it and  
the car will shift just fine.
