Also kinda like when Ropger Penske was following Jim Hall in his Chapparal at
Laguna Seca, and noticed that while he was steering with his left hand and
massaging his gearbox with his right, Jim was steering with his left, and
picking his nose with the other, besides posting faster lap times than he was.
The moral of this story? Never under-estimate a brilliant young guy from
Midland, Texas who has Chevrolet's ear, and holds a degree in Mechanical
Engineering from Cal-Tech.
The 1st time that ever layed eyes on Jim Hall was in Jan. 1959 or '60 at the
Palm Spings Road Races held at the airport. He was driving a white/blue 4.5
Maserati that was punched out to 5.7 litres. Jack Nethercutt was in the ex-John
von Neumann Ferrari TR that Phil Hill won the Times Grand Prix in at Riverside
a few months earlier. Jack was using Palm Springs as a shake-down race before
Sebring in the Spring.
In those golden days of yore, I didn't even have to pay to get in. I just
showed my old Hollywood Citizen News time clock card, told them that I was on
assignment to take photos with the Nikon that I was carrying and they gave me
access to everywhere including the hot pits and the starting grid.
I kept looking around for the 'Working Press' hospitality tent, but those
cheap bastards didn't even have one, like the ones that Doug and I used to
partake of at Riverside a few years later. <g>
Lucky I brought my own beer too, they wanted $2 bucks a can at the beer
stands. In those days, it was about $2 a 6er at yer local 'Stop & Rob'
mini-mart. How low could they sink? Remember, the ungrateful swine were dealing
with THE WORKING PRESS! My, how things have changed.

Yer pal (never saw a mark that I couldn't con, right, Doug?) Ferrari Bubba

Sorta the Cunningham crew with their 51 Caddy in 1951 of course - radio and
all - plus a three speed. at Le Mans. They did quite well if I recall.
