Kevin Hine, one of the guys who makes the Beck Spyders, sat at my table
during the Chowder Lunch at Tavern on the Green a few weeks ago to announce
the
2008 Great Race from New York to Paris to commemorate the 100th anniversary of
the original Great Race that was won by the Thomas Flyer.

We had a brief but very interesting discussion about the Beck Spyders, they
are very cool, authentic sports cars and are in no way like the abomination
that is a Fiero based "Ferrari" fakey-doo. I would own one no problem and
would be very proud about it.

PS The Great Race event on February 12 was a lot of fun. The great
grandson of George Schuster, the driver of the Thomas Flyer, gave a great
slide show
and realistic recounting of the original Great Race, which started on
February 12, 1908. While the recreation race won't start until May of this
year,
the interesting thing is that a beautiful snowstorm started during the lunch,
just like during the start of the race 100 years ago to the day.

I'll probably be crucified for this, but I think that I wouldn't mind owning
and driving the Beck Spyder Sure it's a knock-off, and a potential death
trap, especially with a hopped-up Super 90 engine in it, we all know that, but

for me?
