A new BMW 320d or 520d gets 55mpg or 50mpg respectively. As we are taxed
here on CO2 as well, it has very very low CO2. Great cars, full luxury, great
handling and just a little slower than a much bigger engine (lots of torque you

see). Every time I visit the folks back in Florida and see how crap my fellow
americans drive I do wonder why you need anything faster anyway for a daily
driver......(or if the diesel aint in the USA, the 2.0t Audi isn't a bad car)

I can match that wihout goinig back so far - As recently as 1995/96 the
E-Class Mercedes with the then "new" common rail technology was seeing upper
30s to low 40s MPG's. Granted, to get 40+ the driver had to be *very*
gentle with the loud pedal - but it was entirely possible. The E Class is a
mid-sized luxury car that's not turbo charged which was upgraded until it
became NLA in the US.

Last I checked they were reasonably priced - in the mid teens IIRC. With
diesel costs $4+ now they may still be low priced for the kind of car it
is....
