As others have said it all depends.

If you are buying a 2-5 year old MB, BMW, or some other high end highly complex car it is probably worth the premium if it has enough of a warranty left so that any problems will appear and can be sorted out within the warranty period.

But, if you are buying something older, or can get a really good deal and are willing to take a gamble then go for it.

I just bought a 2000 BMW 528 wagon on ebay with 100,000 miles sight unseen. It had several issues that were not disclosed, but since I bought it for what I felt was a very good price, the body and interior are very good (important to me), and I am able to repair it myself, spending a few thousand dollars on parts and some of my time is not a big deal.

But for the average person, buying a car like this, then having to bring it to the dealer or a competent independent with the proper tooling to sort it out could get quite expensive and could be upsetting if one was not used to dealing with this sort of thing.
