I had the honor of meeting Mr. Newman in the paddock area at Laguna Seca back 
in the mid-90's. He had been Nigel Mansell's car owner, and Nigel was the 
reason I started watching open wheel racing. I was walking alongside Mr. Newman 
and told him how much I loved Mansell, and how grateful I was to him (Mr. 
Newman) for helping bring Nigel to America to drive. I then got the nerve up to 
ask him if he could stop for a moment so that I could take a picture of the 
championship ring he was wearing (honoring Nigel's CART championship). He, in 
his dry sense of humor, stopped for me, waited for me to get the camera focused 
while he stuck his ring-wearing hand out forward. In a low voice, he muttered, 
"I feel like the goddamned pope." Well, that did it. I laughed and thanked him 
for his time (after I got my picture) - and loved him even more for everything 
he did to bring happiness to so many lives.
