Actually, the stobie pole, unique is Australia to the state of South
Australia, being reinforced concrete surrounded by solid steel sides, seems
to be an almost perfect design to kill people even at low speed impacts.
These guys were just plain lucky - if instantly decelerating from high speed
to zero like that and throwing away $250k can be considered lucky! But they
are alive, an outcome not usually guaranteed with a stobie encounter.
