Ferrari Bubba notes "I noticed this? from films back in the 1950's and '60s with British Lucas and Smiths tachs. They were built this way and there's a reason, but I forgot why. Sir Sterling had them in his Coopers and Lotus cars for sure."
Vibration. In those olden golden days - about 2 laps into a race the tires would pick up rubber and go out of balance. Add engine vibration - mounted directly to the frames - and by mid race - it was a wonder they could see the gauges at all. These guys weren't just drivers - they were supermen. DOUG
