I think most AAV have an electrical element to help heat the bimetal strip.
If the electrical portion goes, the AAV still opens and closes (unless
gummed up) just by way of heat sinking, it just works off the bimetal strip
movement, so it becomes mechanical.  They are often mounted on the engine
for that reason.  If you have one that's taking a long time to warm up to
lower the idle, maybe check the electrical connection, and make sure that
part is working.

That's kinda my understand of it anyway.

I've found, one of the benefits of tinkering at home; you often buy parts
you don't need from misdiagnosing things.  Geez, after seeing the price of
some of these parts now, am I ever glad I messed up a bit before and now
have a few extra parts sitting on the shelf. lol.  If you guys think it
hurts to break a fog light on your 328, don't muck up the fuel dis on your K
jetronic car, or mess up that WUR! lol.
