Erik, I think you are right on on the button.  And it's not just F1.  
Everything seems to be aimed at short term gain at the expense of the future.  
Witness:

The term of the 'long term strategy' of the board of directors of about any 
company is equal to the term the members serve.  Check their policies.  They 
talk a good long term strategy but the aim is maximized cash now, today.

WalMart vacuums cash out of communities as fast as possibly with loss-leader 
pricing, while destroying all local small businesses - then they move on 
leaving no long term solution in their wake.

School boards talk about little more than cutting costs and saving money so as 
to offer more budget to the sports departments, while students (a.k.a. the 
future) knowledge suffers.

And we don't EVEN want to talk about FedGovCo and their Social security scam!

Somehow we need to curb the greed and invest in the future.  Our kids may not 
thank us - but they will appreciate it.
