My Shitbox (TM) was the same way until I took the List's advice and  switched 
to Swpco gear oil. No 2nd gear grinding after that, even when  cold.

long drive.  Everything he said was as expected except  that second gear was

an option until the car warmed up!  Second gear  in my 308GTB is smooth and 
easy, even dead cold but my Mondial QV has no  second gear for the first 5 
miles! :-P   I just found it interesting  that the Daytona he drove shared a 
quirk 
with our later mid-engine cars.
