Not ever having been accused of being an "Obama Change Supporter" I do have to say on this point there is some need to agree not with his means, but with the policy of removing firearms from the cockpit. Having graduated from a number of academies and schools, not the least applicable of which in this case is the National Transportation Board (NTSB) Aircraft Accident and Advanced Accident Investigation Course and co-authoring the then U.S. Army Safety Center's Course on Aircraft Fire and Explosion Investigations, being retired from the Federal agency that often misleads and misapplies sanctions as well as misinterpreting statistics and studies, but in the old days was full of "barrel suckers" and other firearms experts I think that the original idea of arming airline pilots, as well as being an experience (albeit significantly less experienced than Clyde with only about 6,000 hrs of flight time including a mutually enjoyable tour in Southeast Asia and 37 years as rated Military Aviator and a licensed Commercial Pilot with both Fixed and Rotary Wing ratings including Instrument Ratings in both categories and a type rating or two) was a fiasco and simply a "knee-jerk" (emphasis on "jerk") reaction to 911 as was much that is law today, see the USA Patriot Act for an example. The job of the pilot(s) is to safely fly the airplane and not to convert the cockpit into the OK Corral either voluntarily or involuntarily. Safety in a commercial airliner begins and ends at the cockpit door. Whether it be air marshals, or improvements in the construction, delay and durability of that ingress/egress to the cockpit keeping the potential invader, the hijacker of any stripe individual or group terrorist(s) the only truly successful strategy is to keep them outside of the cockpit. If you need an armed individual in the cockpit, which IMNSHO is a bad idea in any event, perhaps it is time to resurrect the third seat and put an air marshal in there with the flight deck crew. Maybe this would be a good job for retired Federal agents, who could not only get paid for being there but also getting some free travel as a perk <G>. There is a complete dearth of examination and study as to the effects of distraction in the cockpit, including the effects upon crew coordination which is the crux of all successful flight operations where more than one rated pilot is required for the operation of the aircraft in question, of armed conflict and the redirection of attention of a primary crew member in a conflict situation. If two pilots were not required to operate the aircraft under normal conditions let alone the elevated status of conflict in the cockpit one would think that the airlines would be lobbying to eliminate the second seat in Part 131 operations as they did the position of Flight Engineer in transportation aircraft? Dispute and conflict in an airliner is best resolved when it is not allowed to progress past the "passenger and cabin crew as hostages" situation. In the worst case possible someone qualified in the operation of the specific type of aircraft in question must remain alive for even the most minimally acceptable resolution of the issues.
