Hi Gang --
I was catching up on my reading today and finally got around to my
copies of "Cruising World" which is a magazine about sailing and sailboats.
I always underestimate the stupidity of people! No reason that should come
as a surprise I guess but when I read something like what follows, I'm
amazed more people don't die. Seems the owner of a 41' Sailing Vessel set
sail for Europe from New England. Nothing too odd there but the extent of
their navigation charts consisted of a 11x14 laminated print of the Atlantic
and the eastern US - the kind newspapers & radio stations give away around
the start of Hurricane season. And that was it! Of course, they dont show
much - many details like islands are not shown! So it came as little
surprise to anyone but those onboard when they ran aground on a island Sable
Island which is about 100 mi off the coast of Nova Scotia. The remains of
the yacht are still there but the crew was rescued a few days after running
aground.
The other bit of stupidity was the Federal Luxury Tax Act passed during the Clinton regime and its affect on a sailboat company that built very high-end sailoats and trawlers (think a combination of Ferrari and Rolls Royce) called Cherubini who had been in business for decades. Seems the culture of class hatred & warfare had found another victim. Not only were the family members and true old world craftsmen eventually put out of work but all the small companies that supplied Cherubini who were forced to cut back or go out of business all together.
I'm sure the politicians (themselves often multimillionaires+ themselves) smiling as they stuck it to the rich people, without giving a thought to all the families who lost their life's work because of a groups desire to punish the rich. I seem to remember the thinking being tons of tax money would be generated if a tax on expensive goodies were passed. Evidently no one gave any thought to the rich people changing their buying habits. I suspect the current administration's war on wealth ill be even more hurtful.
