RIR Pits in the Old Days

Please excuse the pix of Harrison fishing in Lake DeGrey, which is about 200
feet, thru the pines off our back deck. I'm proud of the boy, still pulling
straight A's since 1st grade, and expect great things to come from him in the
future.

The shots of interest is from the book, 'Dan Gurney and his Eagle Racing Cars.'
It shows the 1967 Rex Mays 300 Indy Car race, held in late November at
Riverside Raceway, and won by Gurney.

The top pix on the right is Dan, passing Jimmy Clark for the lead. Clark's
engine expired soon after due to using too much nitro in the fuel.

The bottom right shows just how lax pit security was back in those days, as
your humble servant is pictured over the wall, in Gurney's hot puts, holding
the refueling hose during his final pit stop. LMFAO! The Tower in the
background is the old LAX control tower, which was given to the raceway to be
used as race control and press facilities.

I still have the #32 (working press, unlimited access) pass hanging on my wall.

My daughter Marlene gave me the book for my birthday a few years ago, and I
nearly fell over when I saw the picture of the pit stop. How cool is that?

Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba
