I think that this is the crux of the matter. The larger dealers are well-leveraged to cause something such as this to happen. After all, if you have one retailer that sells 1000 units/mo (from the company though not necessarily through a single brand) through multiple shops in varied locations competing with small single unit dealerships that move 100 or fewer units, perhaps of a single brand only, per month. Fewer retailers mean less competition for the survivors, less necessity for negotiation with the customer, and higher prices as demand continues stagnant (nothing in it overall for the manufacturer) but supply sources are reduced (the large dealers gain the sales that might have been negotiated with the smaller brand, single unit dealerships). Once again, government interference adversely affects, by disenfranchising of some of the available dealerships, the economically sound, but not exceptionally wealthy section of the populace. If you like the sales/supply limited Ferrari marketing structure in this company you should love the new GM & Chrysler. The big difference being that Ferrari marketing eliminated competition in it marketing plan while our government intervened to the disadvantage of the population in general for the benefit of a few large automobile marketers.
