I've had an Optima red top in my 308 for close to 10 years and have had no problems. I do keep it on a battery tender at all times though.

Just my 0.02 YMMV ...

My 36R-84 went south after only 8 years. It won't hold a charge. Is there a more optimal choice out there? I've heard that 34R is no longer made. True?

Optima batteries are a bad choice for high temperature environments
which is why there that don't fare well in Ferraris located when hot
radiator air blows over them.

Get an Autozone highly rated battery for $90 with full warranty for 3 years and
replace it at 2 yrs 11 months for free forever.
