Was Gerry's closed course?

Who was the first to break 200mph on a closed course in a race car? It was
before 1972...

Hmmmm, CAM2? - yeah. yer right, that's it, not STP.  I just recall it was a
red-ish car.  Very small oil cooler opening.  I also recall that Gerry
Grant - a really big fellow who had a habit of breaking steering wheels, was
the first to break 200 mph in a Gurney Eagle - um, 1972 or so.

He might've done another closed course record in the early 70s, but his
famous one was in 1975 in the CAM2 sponsored 917-30.

They did blow a lot of turbo Porsche motors up in the beginning of 917-10
development. Porsche gave him an engine that didn't have a dyno chart before
5000rpm and would not idle. It was the precursor to the modern "dyno" motor
that's never designed to be used on a road.

They had no fuel/air metering at idle, below 5000rpm and between 5-8000rpm.
He and the chief engineer at Porsche developed fuel/air mixture ratios for
the full rev range, then had Bosch build a fuel injection system to support
it. Then it finally ran correctly.

Closed track record? Ayep - in the early 70's. STP sponsored 917. Tough
thing was he blew up abut 50 motors - or was it three? trying to do it -
seems the old flat 12 was designed to jump on it, brake, jump on it, brake
and not just jump on it for 10 miles.

I recall looking at the Penske pit during the USRRC - US Road Race of
Champions - a sorta Jr. CanAm before Mark jumped into fray with Porsche.
Every where I looked - the car was double and triple back up ----- if you
don't first finish, you can't finish first.

Next was Mark's trip into the Rex Mays 300 at Riverside in early December as
the last USAC race of the year for points. He was badgering Gurney big time
for first place when he just ticked one of the buried half tires (yeah, they
buried a tire and left half of it exposed to define the inside of the
corner - man, talk about dragons teeth?) and sucked off his RF suspension.
I have a picture of him just 1/2 second after he did that at turn 6 still
balanced on the loaded three wheels and a MOST disgusted look - oh yeah -
Bell open face helmets in those days. Ah well.
