Dennis: Ken R. has some great suggestions. Since I spent a lot of time assigned to the Native American Reservations of the Southwest and in SE Arizona (right near where Tom used to live) around Ft. Huachuca I am prejudiced to a serious extent. I have to disagree with Ken as to your available distance if the 5-6 days is for a round trip. Either you will be so busy driving that you won't have time to do anything else or you will be so tired you won't be up to enjoying yourself. If that time frame is for going each way that is a different proposition. Down and dirty, I'd head west on I-70 until it I would intersect old Route 66 (lots of tourist trap stuff but a nice baseline for traveling), spend some time in N.M. at stops in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and then catch old Rte. 666 up to the Four Corners area. From there you can make a time based decision as to whether spend some time touring the "res", though without a 4x4 it might not be as exciting, taking the narrow gauge railroad, hitting Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, etc. In any event, if that is a roundtrip time frame consider being a little less ambitious and finding a destination closer to home unless driving is, in and of itself, the vacation. And, my guess is that Clyde's trip might span a little longer time frame. Dr. Steve In a message dated 7/13/2009 9:49:11 P.M. Will be making a cross-country drive in early August from Boston to Manhattan then out to Monterey, CA. Should take 5-6 days. Looking for suggestions/advice on good routes to take. Will be four of us in a convoy, driving some very cool machinery (details to be announced later, he said with a grin). Possible stops include Las Vegas, Moab, Denver, Grand Canyon, Chicago, St Louis, and more. Basically, want to get as West as fast as possible, as our thinking is that the more enjoyable parts of the trip would be further west, but open to ideas. Could take the more northerly route through Chicago and then Denver, but a more southerly route is also a possibility. Places to stop/stay, cool car-gatherings, GREAT ROADS, etc., would be appreciated. (And, if this works out, we'll probably be a rolling car-gathering/cool thing too.) :-) Thanks, --Dennis 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III...........1975 Pontiac GV Conv. 1980 MB 450SL..................................1982 RR Corniche 1985 MB 280 GE G-Wagen................. 1985 GMC Brigadier 20 Ton Winch/Wrecker 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spur................1990 Cadillac "Eagle" Hearse 1994 F-350 Powerstroke 4x4................1995 Ferrari 348 Spyder 1996 Bronco ......................................2000 Lincoln Town Car 2004 Excursion...................................(+ Audrey's 2x MB's) and a 1976 Fire Truck...................................HAHN, WARNER & SWASEY- DUPLEX DIVISION HOWE APPARTUS .
