Hey Doug -
I'd start by looking at a VW Jetta or Passat with TDI Diesel - they get 40+ MPG without trying - diesels are not the same as they used to be. You'll be surprised at how easily they start and are almost silent.

A little more upscale is the Mercedes E300D made from 95-99 iirc. Naturally the newer ones have more goodies & refinement. They started selling E Class (mid-sized sedan) diesels again in '07 I believe. These are extremely nice and still get 40+ MPGs. Some owners get 50 mpg when using a very light foot.

Maintenence is minimal - oil (Mobil 1) & filter changes are the only things requiring attention very often (5k-8k mi IMO).

At the moment diesel is selliing for a little less than regular gas - like it always did until last year.

Good luck -
