Re: NFC: Laid off

After some 40 odd years working in newspapers from Honolulu to Detroit,
with many low-light stops in between, unlike poor Tom in Tulsa, I guess that I
bailed out just in time. (1996.)

Our State Newspaper of Record, the Little Rock Democrat-Gazzette just laid
off over 70 people in the newsroom by it's self. No telling how many
pressmen or other trades were added to the toll.

Plus, after 138 years of publishing, and serving Southern Arizona, the
Tucson Citizen, where I spent the last 10 years of my 'checkered' career,
recently ceased publication, throwing the entire staff out in the street in the

middle of the stinkin' desert.

And the beat goes on . . .

With all of my varied newspaper experience, if I wanted to hit the job
market again, the only job that I would be qualified to hold would be as a
crash test dummy, working for our beloved GM (Government Motors.)

Has anyone out there seen 'Death of a Salesman?' But, ach, the memories.

Yer 'seen it all' pal, Ferrari Bubba

Tom:

Sorry to hear about the loss of your job. You seem to have a lot of
skills that have value, even in current markets. Do an inventory of your
skills
and those things that you like to do and remember to keep an open mind
and
be creative as to how you can apply those skills, experience and interests

in a new gig. Don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone into newer

technology areas as the business principles haven't necessarily changed
much. There might be new media, channels of distribution and methods of
reaching customers but the idea of marketing and selling products to
consumers
hasn't changed.

In this economy, there are lots of companies that are searching for people

to help them grow their businesses and I know that your work ethic will
help you find them. It sounds counterintuitive, but a company is more
likely
to need help in a bad economy than in a good economy and you may be the
one
to help them recover and resume growth. One door closing just means that

another door somewhere else is opening up!

Good luck and let us know if there is anything that we can do to help you
in your search.

John

Yeah. It took me a year and a half to find a job once we moved from
Arizona to Oklahoma. And, I was there for 38 months, give or take a
couple of
days, weeks, whatever. And, called into the Manager's office today and
laid
off. 3 people on the Classified Auto Team, not enough business, I'm on
the "re-hire" list, etc.

But, then 2 or 3 minutes after I left the building (no, not like Elvis)
another person on the Auto Team was FIRED.

Hmmph. WTF, over?

So, just a note to let y'all know what's up. Bubba, newspapers suck, but
buy the print version of that out tomorrow! :)

Brian Keegan, Dave Thursby, shoot me a private, like to see what's
available in the Ferrari parts biz, like I did the closeout stuff lo
these many
moons ago online.

Kind regards,
