Note to Michael James I bought a 79 928 in 82 and it was a money pit like your 308 QV so a Porsche is not a sure bet either.
I bought an 81 308 GTSi in Jan 2005 and has been a GREAT car.
One point I notice you guys make 'PAY CASH'. I belive thats great if you can do it (I did NOT, nor could I) But my 308 is a toy, not a daily driver, I do my own maitenance. My 308 only failed me once (and acutally I failed, it when I changed all the fuel hoses I did not do the coolent hoses) when last year we getting 3D glasses for a superbowl party and coolent started to leak 1 mile from home.

I buy parts through out the year and when winter comes I install them. I drive at least 47 miles evry 2 weeks weather permiting. Clyde this one is for you : I have yet to do the 45 degree hoses. Hope to do that this winter.

I agree buy the BEST car for you and check the paper work and then still be prepared.
My 308 had 30,000 mile service 9050 mile b4 I bought it.
I insisted that the timing belt be done b4 I took delivery (had to drive 90 miles home). The PO said he never had a belt fail with time on miles. Turned out that 30,000 mile service performed by an authorized Ferrari dealer did NOT service the front (behind the AC and it was ready to fail). So buyer beware.

I would echo Clyde's comments - if you have to worry about the cost of maintenance, you can't afford it. I bought a 'good driver' 308 QV for $30K that was the epitome of deferred maintenance (cheap cars are sold by cheap owners). Norwood Performance in Texas gave the car a good bill of health when I paid them $400 for a PPI five years ago. They lied to me about the car. The Ferrari world is filled with liars - every seller becomes one when they have a high-priced, neglected toy to unload.

I've spent over $15,000 to have the suspension and braking system re-built (due to age and deferred maintenance), and will probably be spending about $15,000 to have the engine re-built this winter. I've also spent close to $5,000 to have the cooling system rebuilt (due to age and deferred maintenance) only to learn that my overheating issue is inside the heads and engine block. And much of the work performed on the car I've done myself - my Ferrari has spent more of its life on jackstands in my garage than it has on its own tires.

SO - I've spent about 2/3 the purchase price of the car already, and am looking to spend MORE than the purchase price of the car to get it running 'right' again. If your passion for the car justifies this in your mind, I'm sure someone out there will be happy to sell you a 308/328 for $30K like they did me. If it doesn't, you might wish you would have bought a Porsche insread.....

Ok,

So I've been on this damn list for 10 years now. Finished undergrad,
grad school, law school. I'm positioned, following approval of my
physical, to be commissioned into the Army JAG corps. I'll be
stationed at Ft. Drum, NY. Alright, so that is pretty good.

After watching enough Top Gear with my wife, she is of the
understanding that I should have a fun car. I agree with her. USAA
gave me a nice commissioning loan at 2.9%, and quite frankly, I think
it is time to live the dream.

Ok, so I have to convince the wife of the F-Car. She knows of my
addiction, and I think she has come to accept it, after spending 7
years of my life with her. But she has this pesky MBA, and she want
numbers.

So I am interested in average cost per year, cost of 3.25k, 7.5k,
15k, and 30k services, depreciation, and other funky stuff that might
come up.

Also, a Clyde price.

Now I start train, presumably, in Feb. I finish in July. I know the
search should take longer than 8 months, so I don't mind being in OBC
while looking.

What say you, F-list?

John
