My gut says that this guy overpaid for the car originally, had an agreed
value policy at around $2MM, wanted to sell it, realized that he'd lose
800K+ on it, and decided to park it in salt water and collect the insurance.

He could have made up a better story than a pelican... Unless it was a
Pelican drop ship from Halo. :)

Not entirely dishonest -- it was only PARKED in the rain.

Come to think of it the Bug was never "driven" off-road -- as it was
floating at the time.

I'd add an LOL if it wasn't so sad that these wonderful cars were being
destroyed.
