Hi Peter,
It might not be so straightforward. .  Even making the astronomical $$'s he was pulling in, lifestyles tend to rise to the level of income.

Personally I can't comprehend spending that kind of money but once it's in the checking acct things once considered out of reach become affordable - how about a private island (to get away from all those adoring fans)?  a helo?  private jet? a home in Monaco?  another in Paris?  and on and on. Then there's the maintenance on all that stuff.

Maybe I'm wrong - but from what I've heard about people becoming wealthy and blowing it I'm sure it can happen.  Hopefully MS was more financially aware that the people who could not hold onto the money coming in - with his discipline I would think he would.

But some people are drawn into buying lots of stuff - and of course, the govt has to get its share....

Not saying you?re not right - but I think it?s a complex situation.  It'd be hard for me to give up those millions plus the knowledge that a world class team was in place - a team with the potential to keep winning for a few more years.   To let all that go because you dislike some of the people in power might not be logical.

If he'd left, say, after winning 3 Championships, he'd likely go somewhere else and start over.

Anyway  -- maybe someday we'll know.

What I?ve never understood is why, if there was such bad blood, did he hang around Ferrari for all these years? I also saw the tension, and I?ve heard all the rumours, but why hang around?? Obviously it wasn?t the money.

RE:  Schumi at Monza.

I don't think this was rocket science.  I kept that race on Tivo for
some time, and watched it over and over.  Not the race, the
after race activities.  I knew there was a rat in the parlor, as
you could see it in the reactions of the various parties.  Schumi
was medium warm in his greeting of Todt after the race, not
his normal overwhelming self.  But he was totally *icy* in his
response to Montezemolo's approach.  Even the SpeedTv guys
were making comments that it was weird.  I totally knew something
was amiss, and I was not in the least surprised over the resignation
speach.  I mean, at that point I think I had it already written on my
cocktail knapkin.  Others stared in disbelief, I was "ho-hum", saw
it coming.  It was obvious that there was at least some political
motivation to his resignation.  It was not completely his personal
decision.

Also, come to think of it, there was some discussion that Schumi
was contemplating his future intentions, and that he may/might
have made those intentions public at Monza.  Again, no surprise.
