FG: I can hardly begin to tell you the nightmare you would be inheriting with a, relatively, undriven 288 or F40, for much the same reasons -- except the parts would be even harder to find - or (more likely) recreate. 20 year old brake fluid?? May as well replace the pots, pistons and brake lines. 20 year old coolant - wonder where the corrosion will begin (or end). 20 year old suspension, if it isn't locked up - it will be. Even with regular maintenance - you are still looking at fluids, and gaskets, and bushings, and... and... that have not been properly "worked" for YEARS. I could go on and on - some of the things I personally witnessed over the years have been simply criminal. Once saw a "collectible" Ferrari that had sat still so long that the entire fuel system had coalesced into a thick resin. EVERYTHING - from the fuel tank, to the fuel pump, to the fuel lines, to the carbs, to the engine itself had to be stripped down, cleaned (or replaced) and reassembled. Can't say that "low mileage" was any gift to that owner (or the poor, poor car!) I am pretty sure that cLyDe would be the first to tell you (and anyone else who would listen, or might just happen to be within ear shot) that time and disuse are no friends to high performance machinery. While it might be OK for a garage queen that only gets started (or - god forbid - pushed) for the jaunt from the trailer to the lawn for display - if put on the road, the same car would be a never-ending disaster. I love how they put premiums on these ultra low mileage cars. You can drop the value of a 288 GTO $100-200k just by going from 1,000 miles to 5-10k! I doubt the 1k car has better interior or paint! There probably is a GTO owner who drove an astounding 50k or so.....think we can pick it up for $150k? :) FG _________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe or modify your subscription options, please visit: http://lists.ferrarilist.com/mailman/options/ferrari/ferrarisimo%40comcast.net Sponsored by BooyahMedia.com and F1 Headlines http://www.F1Headlines.com/ |
